The bookings that fill flats in Reboleira, Damaia, Venteira and Falagueira are not leisure bookings, and they are not always planned far ahead. A family whose relative has been admitted to hospital books at short notice and arrives tired; a contractor takes a flat for the length of a job. Both need the same thing: someone who opens the door, hands over the keys, explains the entryphone, the heating, the washing machine and the bins, and answers the phone afterwards. We do the handover in person, in Portuguese, English or French, and we tell people the practical geography — the metro and the buses, where the hospital entrance is, which supermarket opens late, where a car can actually be left. Changeovers after a long occupancy are substantial pieces of work. Ovens, fridges, extractor filters and washing machine seals are cleaned rather than glanced at, linen and mattress protectors are renewed, drains and balcony outlets cleared, marks on walls recorded, the inventory checked item by item and the whole thing photographed.
