Gym and communal pools carry a bather load that domestic routines are not designed for, and the symptoms are predictable. Chlorine gets consumed faster than anyone expects, combined chlorine builds up and produces the sharp smell people blame on over-chlorination when the reality is the opposite, and the water goes flat and irritating. We measure free and combined chlorine separately rather than relying on a total figure, along with pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabiliser, and we look at turnover time and dosing control as closely as the readings themselves. Filtration that runs long enough is usually worth more than any additional product. Hard mains water is the second recurring theme in this part of the Lisbon crown. Regular topping up pushes calcium hardness upwards, and scale then forms on the waterline, inside the filter and in heat exchangers where a pool is heated. It also dulls the water in a way that gets misdiagnosed. We track hardness and saturation over time, clean waterline tiling mechanically, inspect heat exchangers and dosing lines, and adjust balance rather than piling on chemicals to chase an appearance.
