We carry our equipment up by hand, three or four flights at a time, on the streets off Rua Ferreira Borges and around the market, and we ask on booking how high the flat is and how tight the turns are. It also settles a question people often ask first: whether the sofa needs to go somewhere to be cleaned. It does not, and in these buildings it usually could not. Everything happens where the piece stands, with the floor protected underneath and the moisture drawn back out by machine rather than left to evaporate into the room. Older furniture behaves differently from new. Foam that has been compressed for twenty years holds dust deep in the seat base, and the top-layer clean a domestic vacuum manages barely touches it. Our first pass is mechanical for that reason. Fabrics from that era are often wool blends or heavy cottons, which need a gentler product, less water and careful attention to colour movement, so we test a hidden panel before starting. On rugs we check whether the dye is stable and whether the backing has begun to break down, because an old jute-backed rug can distort if it is over-wetted. Where the arms are worn shiny or the fabric has faded unevenly along the sunny side, we say plainly that a clean will lift the dirt and even out the tone but will not put back what the years have taken. Yes. We carry the equipment up ourselves, which is precisely why we ask about floors and staircases when you book rather than turning up unprepared. Nothing needs to come down: the sofa, the mattress and the rugs are all cleaned in the flat. What helps us is knowing beforehand if the stairwell is narrow or turns sharply, and having a tap and a socket we can use in the flat itself.
The sofa has been in the family for thirty years. Is it worth cleaning?
Usually yes, and often more worthwhile than a newer one, because decades of settled dust come out and the colour lifts noticeably. What we will not do is oversell it. Shine on the arms where hands have rested, uneven fading on the side nearest the window and thinning threads are wear, not soiling, and they stay. We look at the piece, tell you which of the two we are dealing with, and let you decide before any money is spent.
My mother is elderly and worries about dust in her bedroom. What can you actually do?
We can deep clean and sanitise the mattress, the bed head and any rug in the room, which removes the dust and the mites living in the fabric and leaves the textiles noticeably fresher. What we will not claim is that this treats a medical condition or ends anyone's symptoms; that is a conversation for her doctor. We also work around her routine, doing the mattress first thing so it has the whole day to dry.
