The first calculation in Alfama is geometry. A doorway under seventy centimetres, a low lintel and a landing with no room to swing a panel will stop an assembled wardrobe dead, so we measure the diagonal of the finished piece against the opening before a single dowel goes in. Much of the demand comes from short-stay flats and small rentals in the neighbourhood, where space is measured in centimetres and the furniture has to earn its place: fold-down tables, bed frames with storage drawers, stacking shelves, compact sofa beds. Getting the packaging back down the steps afterwards is part of the service, since it is a genuine nuisance in a house with no lift. What a job costs depends on the number of pieces, their complexity, whether anything is being removed first, and how long the carry from the nearest vehicle access is.
