Professional Painting in Alfama
We cover Alfama for painting, and our team is used to the practicalities of the bairro: vans that cannot get near the door, materials carried up the Escadinhas de São Miguel by hand, staircases too narrow for a full-length ladder. The buildings around the Sé, the Castelo and Mouraria are among the oldest lived-in stock in the country, with lime-plastered walls that will not tolerate a hard, sealing film over them. Salt-laden air rolling up from Santa Apolónia adds to the load. Painting here is therefore less about colour than about reading the wall first, treating whatever is wetting it, and choosing a product the old plaster can live with.

About our service in Alfama
Lime is the whole story in Alfama. Walls built of rubble stone and finished in lime plaster work by letting moisture pass through and evaporate at the surface. Seal that surface with a tight modern coating and the water still arrives but can no longer leave, so it collects behind the film and pushes it off in blisters and flakes, often taking a layer of plaster with it. On those walls we use breathable, lime-compatible finishes, brush out rather than build up a thick skin, and accept that the result is a softer, more matt look than a new-build flat. It is the finish the building was designed for. That matters because so many walls in the bairro are damp. Painting over damp does not fix it, and nowhere is that clearer than here, with narrow streets that never see the sun, ground floors cut into the hillside and old plumbing running through party walls. Before we decorate we want to know why the wall is wet: our moisture-detection service establishes where the water is coming from, bricklayer handles replastering and waterproofing, and water-leak-repair sorts out a leak on a pipe. Diagnosis, then masonry, then paint. Skip a step and the new finish will be back to how it looks now by next winter. Inside, the work is patient rather than quick. Old timber shutters, window casements and panelled doors are stripped back where the enamel has crazed, degreased, keyed and primed to suit the timber before any topcoat goes on, and we allow the drying time the manufacturer specifies between coats. Ceilings often need loose distemper brushed off before anything else. Outside, the facade and the stairs are common parts of the building, so nothing there is touched without the condomínio's agreement, and Alfama sits within a protected historic area where exterior colour, render and materials are controlled: the câmara municipal is the place to confirm what your address allows, and we do not make those applications on your behalf. Many properties here are holiday lets, so we plan the work between bookings and send photos as we go.

Frequently Asked Questions
What owners in Alfama usually want to know:
Can you use ordinary plastic paint on my old lime walls?
We would rather not, and on most Alfama walls we will advise against it. A tight, film-forming coating stops the plaster releasing moisture, which is exactly how these walls stay dry. The water then gathers behind the paint and takes it off in blisters, sometimes lifting plaster with it. Breathable, lime-compatible finishes give a slightly softer, more matt appearance and behave properly on the substrate. We tell you what we intend to use and why before you decide.
There is no vehicle access to my door. Is that a problem?
Not for us, but it does affect planning. Paint, primer, filler, dust sheets, boards and steps come up the steps on foot, and we work out where a van can legally stop for loading before the day. Narrow, turning staircases also mean smaller access equipment inside the flat. None of it stops the job, it simply needs organising in advance, which is part of what the survey is for.
My flat smells musty and there is mould in the corner behind the wardrobe. Will painting sort it?
It will not. Mould in a cold corner with furniture against it is a symptom, and covering it with paint, even a fungicidal one, only buys a season. The cause has to be found: it might be condensation with no ventilation, salt-laden damp in the masonry or water coming from outside. Book moisture-detection to establish the source, put the building work right through bricklayer if the plaster needs replacing, and then let us decorate a wall that is dry.
