Post-Construction Cleaning in Alfama
A refurbishment in Alfama ends the way it started: with everything travelling by hand. Around the Castelo, the Sé, Mouraria and the Escadinhas de São Miguel there is rarely a kerb to park against and even more rarely a lift, so every sack of rubble, every bucket and every bag of swept dust comes down the steps on somebody's shoulder. That single fact shapes the whole job, and it is the first thing we work out on the visit. We cover post-build cleaning in this part of the city: clearing what the builders left, then stripping the flat from the top down, because these old rooms hold lime and stone dust in every groove, moulding and window rebate.

About our service in Alfama
Old buildings here are cleaned in an order, and the order is not negotiable. Debris and offcuts leave first. Then we work downwards — light fittings, tops of doors, cornices, window reveals, skirtings — and the floor is the last surface we touch. Everything is vacuumed dry before a drop of water goes near it, because cement and plaster dust mixed with water turns into a grey slurry that sinks into the grain of old timber and into the joints of hydraulic tiles, and once it has cured there it is far harder to lift than the dry dust ever was. Where a flat has its original parquet or wide pine boards, water stays at a damp cloth and no further, and azulejo panels get a neutral product rather than anything that could etch the glaze. The windows and their frames take the longest, which surprises most owners. Fine dust packs into the runners, into the rebate the sash closes onto and into the mastic joints, and it has to come out mechanically before the glass is washed, or the first wipe grinds it across the pane. We will also say what is not going to shift. Paint dried onto a grout line, mortar cured into porous stone on a threshold or a step, glass scored by a trowel or by protective film left baking in the sun — those are damage rather than dirt, and we point them out before we treat that area instead of letting you find them later and assume they were missed. Two things worth saying plainly. Building dust keeps falling for days after the builders go, out of ventilation grilles, off the tops of wardrobes, out of runners we have just emptied, so one visit seldom closes the matter; a second, lighter pass once the space has settled is normal and not a sign anything went wrong. And we clean, we do not finish the builder's work — touching in paint, filling missing grout or refitting a skirting that was never properly set belongs to whoever did the works, or to our bricklayer service. Construction waste goes to an authorised disposal point. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, closed on Sunday, and we set the date against the real end of the works, which in a building like yours tends to move.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Alfama owners ask us before the builders have even finished:
There is no vehicle access to my door. How does the rubble get out?
In bags, by hand, down the steps — that is simply how this neighbourhood works and we plan for it. On the visit we look at where a van can legally stand, how far the carry is and how many flights are involved, because that is what drives the effort in a job like this rather than the floor area. It is also why we prefer to walk the route rather than quote from a description over the phone.
The flat looked clean when you left and a week later there was dust again. Why?
Because construction dust is far finer than household dust and it does not all settle at once. It sits on top of wardrobes, inside ventilation grilles, in window runners and in the gaps around pipework, and it keeps drifting down for days as the building is used again. A single clean after a full refurbishment rarely ends it. We would rather tell you that in advance and agree a lighter second pass than pretend a stripped-out flat behaves like a tidy one.
Some paint has dried on the tiles and the bath has glue marks. Will they come off?
Possibly, and possibly not, and we will look before promising. Fresh paint on glazed tile often lifts; paint that has cured into an open grout line usually does not without cutting the grout out. Adhesive from protective film that was left on a bath or a frame through weeks of sun is one of the worst things we deal with, and it sometimes leaves a shadow. We assess each mark, tell you which ones we expect to beat, and leave the rest to be made good by the trade that caused them.
