About our service in Benfica
Volume is what defeats households in this parish. A family of five produces bed linen, towels and the rest faster than one machine and one rack can process, and when it rains for a fortnight the flat fills up with damp washing and the windows run with condensation. Putting the bed linen and towels on a weekly or fortnightly collection resets that. The bags go out on an agreed day and come back pressed and folded, and the rack goes back in the cupboard where it belongs. Shared flats work slightly differently. Around the university residences and the older buildings divided into rooms, several people share one machine and a queue forms. We take each household or each room as a separate lot, bagged and washed apart with its own count, which avoids the arguments and means nobody is folding someone else's sheets. The bulky work is constant here because the flats are small and the wardrobes are not. Winter duvets, wool blankets, quilted bedspreads, mattress protectors and the heavy curtains from a room facing the Estrada de Benfica, which collects road dust all year. None of these fit a domestic drum properly, and a badly rinsed duvet dries stiff and smells of detergent for months. They go through the workshop and come back dry and folded, which is a very different object from a duvet that has spent three days over a door frame. There is also a limited amount of furnished letting near the metro, taken by the month by students and people relocating for work, and for those flats we hold replacement sets in rotation so a change of tenant is not waiting on a wash cycle to finish. It is a small share of what we do in Benfica, and we would rather say so plainly than pretend the neighbourhood is something it is not.

Can you wash a duvet that is too big for my machine?
That is one of the standard jobs. An overloaded domestic drum cannot rinse a duvet properly, which is why it comes out stiff, patchy and smelling of detergent, and it will never dry indoors in a flat. Ours is washed on a programme suited to its filling, dried through and returned folded so it goes straight back on a shelf.
