Locksmith in Algés

Algés is built tight against the river and the railway, with older buildings above shopfronts in the centre, denser blocks up towards the Alto de Algés and Miraflores, and quieter streets out through the Dafundo and Cruz Quebrada. Almost everything here shares an entrance with a row of businesses, a stairwell used by more people than live in it, and an entryphone panel that has been repaired more than once. The river air is salt enough to work on outdoor fittings without anyone calling it a seaside. Most of what we do here is booked in advance, on communal doors, ground-floor openings and flat entrances.

About our service in Algés

The shared street door is where we start in most of these buildings. It is opened dozens of times a day, released by an entryphone that pushes the latch against a keep that has never been adjusted, and closed by a spring that stopped closing it properly some time ago. The result is a door that stands ajar for a few seconds every time, or worse, sits unlatched all afternoon because the keep and the latch no longer meet. That is a security problem for every flat above it and it has nothing to do with anyone's individual lock. Adjusting the keep, repairing the closer and replacing the entrance lock and its key set is a condominium job, and we will write down what is needed so it can go to the owners properly. Ground-floor and mezzanine flats in Algés face the street, an internal light well or a small yard, and the hardware protecting those openings is usually whatever was fitted when the building went up. Grilles here are typically good ironwork on tired fixings: bars that have corroded where they enter the render, a hinge that has dropped, a lock that seized years ago and was never mentioned again. Repairing and re-anchoring them is normally the right answer, along with making sure the flat's own entrance closes at more than a single point. That combination changes the picture far more than any one expensive item on its own. Inside the flats it is mostly the accumulated effect of time and bad copies. Keys cut in a hurry at various points over the years each take a little off the mechanism, and by the time one of them stops working the lock has usually been suffering for a while. We replace worn cylinders, upgrade single-point locks on doors that are otherwise perfectly sound, cut fresh sets and check them in the door, and fix the letterbox locks in the hall that have not worked since somebody prised one open. If you are already locked out, that is our blocked-door service instead. Quotes reflect the type and grade of lock, the number of closing points, the condition of the door or grille and the number of keys.

Work Gallery

We watch a communal door close on its own several times before we call it finished, because that is the failure nobody reports. If it stops latching again, we return to put it right.

Frequently Asked Questions

What residents in Algés ask us about:

Our building's front door never closes properly. Is that a lock problem?

Usually it is three small problems at once: a closer that no longer pulls the door the last centimetre, a latch and keep that are no longer aligned, and a lock worn by heavy daily use. They need dealing with together, otherwise the door keeps standing ajar, which affects every flat in the building rather than just one.

The grille on my window is rusty at the bottom. Does it need replacing?

Not necessarily. What matters is the state of the metal where it enters the wall and the condition of the fixings, both of which we check first. Sound bars on failed anchoring can be re-fixed and rehung; only metal that has actually gone through needs to be renewed, and we would tell you plainly which case you are in.

Every key in the house works slightly differently. Should we recut them?

Yes, and preferably before one of them fails. Copies made from copies drift, and each imperfect key wears the mechanism a little further. We cut a clean set, test each one in the door and suggest retiring the old ones, which is a good deal less work than replacing a lock that has been ground down.
