They tend to be larger than a suburban pool, sit in open ground with mature planting around them, and are often some distance from the house, which means nobody notices a problem quickly. Wind carries dust and organic matter across the water all through the dry months, and from autumn the trees do the rest: leaves, needles, olives and seed. On a large surface that is a substantial load. We brush walls, floor and steps, vacuum thoroughly, clear skimmer and pump baskets, assess the filter media rather than assuming a backwash was enough, and verify flow so we know circulation is genuinely restored rather than nominally so. The plant on rural properties is often older and harder worked. Long pipe runs across a garden, a pump sized for a different pool, valves that have not moved in years, and sometimes a borehole feeding the top-up water, which changes the chemistry picture entirely. Borehole and hard water raise calcium hardness and can bring iron or manganese with them, producing staining and cloudiness that no amount of chlorine will fix. We test pH, free and combined chlorine, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and stabiliser, look at what the top-up water is actually doing to the balance, and treat the cause. Season boundaries matter here too. A pool on a quinta left through a wet Loures winter, with leaf fall and no cover, is a serious recovery job in May. Closing it properly and opening it properly is the cheapest maintenance there is. For owners who are away for long periods, we keep the pool alive and send readings after each visit; for communal pools nearer Lisboa we can agree a schedule with the management and report in writing.
