Commercial fittings are assembled to a different standard from domestic ones because they are used far harder. A counter that is leaned on all day, shelving loaded with stock, a display unit knocked by trolleys and bags: none of that forgives a joint left hand-tight. We build these units fully fixed rather than relying on cam locks alone where the design allows reinforcement, we tie tall racking and shelf runs back to the wall, and we level everything on floors that are rarely flat in older premises. Where the work would interrupt trading, we do it in the evening or before opening, which for a small shop is the difference between a normal day and a closed one. The residential side has its own quirks. Much of the housing dates from the 1960s to the 1980s, when doorways were narrower and lifts smaller than the furniture industry now assumes. We measure the flat door, the lift car and the stair turn before agreeing how a large item gets in, and we assemble in the room whenever the finished piece will not pass. Buildings in the higher parts of Brandoa and Casal de São Brás add long flights of stairs to that calculation. Walls run from hollow brick and plaster in the older blocks to plasterboard partitions in renovated flats, and we test before drilling rather than assuming. Tall wardrobes, bookcases and any unit in a child's room are strapped back to the wall. Beyond that it is the everyday list: beds, wardrobes, kitchen units, desks, sofa beds and storage for a small balcony, most of it delivered in more cartons than the flat has room for. Costs follow the number of items, their complexity, the access and floor, whether we work outside normal hours, and whether old furniture or shop fittings have to be dismantled and taken out.
