Old rooms are rarely built to a modern furniture catalogue. We adapt: scribing plinths, packing carcasses so they stand true, moving a fixing point to a sound part of the wall, and occasionally advising that a slightly different unit will fit the alcove far better than the one already ordered. Ceiling heights are generous, so overhead space is often worth using with extension units rather than left empty. What is behind the plaster varies enormously along the line. Some walls are solid masonry that will hold almost anything; others are lath or thin partitions from a later subdivision, where a heavy mirror or wall-hung unit needs a spreader or a fixing into something structural. We test before we commit, and we would rather move a shelf twenty centimetres to catch a solid bearing than hang it optimistically where it looks best. Coastal air adds one more consideration: plated screws left in a bathroom or a sea-facing room will bloom, so stainless goes in where the exposure justifies it. The rental side of the town works to a different clock. Changeovers are short, and the practical need is a bedroom, a sofa bed or a set of dining chairs assembled and in place inside the gap between guests, with packaging gone. We schedule around those windows. For year-round residents the jobs are quieter and steadier: reading chairs and library shelving, garden seating for a terrace above the sea, guest room furniture for family visits. What it costs depends on how many items, how much adaptation the room demands, whether anything is being removed, and the access at the property.
