In the older buildings along the Estrada de Benfica and around the Calhariz, balconies are narrow, the elevations face east and west, and years of outdoor units have already gone up with no particular logic. When we arrive, half the job is finding a position that does not blow against the neighbour's machine or against the balcony balustrade — a unit wedged between two walls dumps its heat into dead air and works under strain permanently. We use that route where it is clear, and propose a multi-split to cover the living room and the bedrooms from a single outdoor unit, which keeps the rest of the balcony free and reduces servicing to one machine outside. Whatever the building, part of the work never changes. We make the copper joints with carefully formed flares, run continuous insulation along the whole line, including the bends, which is where condensation forms when insulation is left open, and pull moisture and air out of the circuit with a vacuum pump before releasing the gas. Then we pressurise and check for leaks. This is what decides whether an installation lasts years or starts losing charge in its second summer, and it is also what you rarely see in a job done in a hurry.
