Houses are terraced up the hillside with steep drives, garden steps and entrances that are rarely at street level, so linen, machines and waste all travel further than the floor plan suggests. Meanwhile the salt never stops. Sea-facing windows lose their clarity within days, railings and gate ironwork film over, garden furniture goes tacky, and stainless fittings mark. Guests photograph the view, so the glass has to be genuinely clean rather than smeared, and the outdoor surfaces they will sit on have to be washed rather than wiped. In season the changeover is the familiar race. The house is only let in summer. Is there anything to do the rest of the year?

There is, and skipping it is what produces a bad first booking. In practice, owners letting through the summer have the glass done at every changeover, which keeps it looking like the photographs guests booked from.
