Locksmith in Lisboa

Very few people moving into a flat in Lisboa know how many keys to it are still in circulation. A previous owner, a former tenant, the estate agent, a cleaner, the neighbour who watered the plants — copies accumulate quietly over the years and nobody ever collects them back in. Changing the lock on the day you take possession closes all of that at once, and it is the measure almost nobody thinks of. We work across the city, from the older buildings of the Baixa, Chiado and Graça to the refurbished flats of Avenidas Novas, Arroios, Areeiro, Estrela and Campolide, and nearly everything we do here is planned work, booked for an agreed time rather than improvised.

About our service in Lisboa

A lock change at handover is a short, tidy job, and it is worth doing properly rather than fitting whatever happens to match the hole. When we come to look at the door we check what is actually there: the type of lock, how many points it closes on, the condition of the door itself and how squarely it sits in its frame. An old single-point lock will always offer less resistance than a modern security lock closing at several points, and on plenty of Lisbon flats the door is perfectly sound while the mechanism inside it has simply reached the end of its working life. Sometimes replacing the cylinder is enough; on other doors it makes more sense to upgrade the whole lock while everything is already open. The second call we get most often is about a lock that has started to grumble. The key has to be lifted, or jiggled, or pushed in while you turn it, and everyone in the household has learned the trick. That is a warning, not a quirk. A mechanism being forced every day wears at both ends and tends to give up at the least convenient moment, often with the key still in it. Dealing with it while the door still opens is a straightforward appointment; dealing with it afterwards is a far heavier intervention. Poorly cut copies do the same damage more slowly, which is why we cut keys properly and test them in the lock before handing them over. Beyond the flat door there is always a second list in a city building: communal street doors that half the residents can no longer turn with their own key, letterbox locks, cellar and storage doors, and the small metalwork jobs on gates and railings that nobody quite owns. We work Monday to Saturday and arrange a slot rather than turning up unannounced, which suits buildings where the entrance is meant to stay shut. If you are standing outside a door that has closed behind you, that is our blocked-door service instead. What a quote comes to depends on the type and grade of lock, the number of locking points, the hardware you choose, the state of the door and how many keys you want cut.

Planned locksmith work we take on across Lisboa:

  • Keys cut and tested in the lock before we hand them over
  • Locks that stick, catch or turn heavily repaired before they fail outright
  • Communal street doors, letterboxes and storage-room locks in shared buildings

Areas We Serve

We cover the whole city — Baixa, Chiado, Estrela, Campolide, Avenidas Novas, Areeiro, Arroios and Graça — and we plan the approach and parking for each address before the visit rather than on the doorstep.

Every lock we fit is tested with each key, from both sides of the door, before we leave. If it stiffens or a key begins to catch afterwards, we return to put it right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions we are asked most often in Lisboa:

I have just bought a flat in Lisbon. Is changing the lock really necessary?

There is no way to know how many copies of the old key exist or who still has one, and no seller can honestly promise you otherwise. A change at handover is a short appointment that settles the question for good, which is why we suggest booking it for the week you get the keys.

Can you change only the cylinder, or does the whole lock have to go?

It depends on what is fitted and what condition it is in. Where the lock body is sound and only the key-operated part is tired, changing the cylinder is the sensible route. Where the lock itself is old, worn or closes at a single point, replacing the whole unit gives you a better result for the work involved. We tell you which case you are in when we see the door.

Can you cut extra keys for the building's street door?

For ordinary keys, yes. Where the building uses a restricted key system, copies are controlled by the manufacturer and we need written authorisation from the condominium administration before ordering them — bring that and we handle the rest.
