The interior is where most of the work is, and it is done in a fixed order because doing it the other way round simply moves the dirt about. Everything comes out first: mats, boot liner, anything loose in the door bins. Then the whole cabin is vacuumed, including under the seats and along the runners where sand collects and grinds. Sand that has been walked into a mat for a whole summer does not come out with suction alone and needs proper extraction; pet hair is a different problem again, because a vacuum head tends to roll over it, and it is lifted with a rubber brush before the vacuum is any use. Only once the loose material is gone do we touch surfaces, so the dashboard, the door cards, the console and the glass are cleaned onto a clean base rather than smeared. The exterior is washed waterless or with very little water, which is what makes the job possible in a residential street or a building garage. It also has a limit we are honest about. If the car has come back from a track or a building plot and is carrying a layer of dried mud or grit, it cannot be dry-washed: dragging that across paint puts fine scratches into it. We look at the car before we start, say so plainly if it needs a proper wash with water first, and clean the inside meanwhile rather than damage the outside. Upholstery is treated according to what it actually is. Fabric seats take extraction and then need to air with the doors open before the car goes back into use, which takes longer on a damp Almada morning than in August. Leather gets a pH-neutral product rather than the all-purpose cleaner that strips it and leaves it dry and shiny. Alcantara is handled separately and gently. We do not polish out scratches, touch bodywork or pressure-wash an engine bay.
