Waterless means what it says. The products go on the panel, they lift and encapsulate the dirt, and it comes away on clean microfibre, folded and turned constantly so nothing is dragged twice across the same paint. There is no bucket, no hose, no foam running down the calçada and nothing going into a street drain. On a narrow street where the gutter runs past somebody's doorway and the drain is four metres from where your car is parked, that is not a detail, it is the whole reason the method works here. We need very little space and we make very little mess, so a car parked tight to a wall in a lane is still a car we can clean. Two things attack paint hard in this part of Lisbon. Pigeon droppings are acidic and they etch: left on a warm panel for a week they will mark the lacquer permanently, and by then no amount of cleaning brings the gloss back. Tree sap is the other, sticky in summer, baked hard by the sun, and stubborn in a way ordinary washing never touches. Both come off far more easily when they are fresh, which is the honest argument for having the car cleaned more often rather than waiting until it looks really bad. There is a limit to the method and we will not pretend there is not. A car genuinely caked in mud or carrying a layer of gritty sand cannot be dry-washed, because wiping abrasive particles across paint is how swirl marks are made. We look at the vehicle first, and if it is too heavily soiled we say so and leave the exterior alone rather than damage it. The interior can always go ahead: vacuuming, mats, upholstery, glass and the dashboard are unaffected by how filthy the outside happens to be.
