Before the water comes out we work out how to reach the collectors safely. In the old town that usually means carrying kit up through the building, so we agree with you or the building manager how the stairwell and roof hatch are used and where we can set up. From there it is a ladder with a harness clipped to an anchor line, or a telescopic pole worked from a flat section or a neighbouring terrace when the rows sit close enough. Nobody walks on the modules, ourselves included. And if the only route runs across old corrugated fibre-cement sheeting we stop: that material breaks under a foot and may contain asbestos, so we find another way in or tell you honestly that we cannot do the job. The washing itself is deliberately unexciting. Demineralised water, plenty of it, and a soft brush at a controlled pressure, working the dried pigeon mess and greasy chimney soot loose rather than attacking it. We never use a pressure washer, because water forced at a frame seal ends up where the electrics are. We never use anything abrasive, because the anti-reflective coating on the glass does not grow back. We never use acidic or alkaline products either, and it is worth adding that a panel cleaned aggressively is a panel whose manufacturer's warranty may no longer stand. These roofs get hot and they get hot early. Cold water on baked glass is a thermal shock that can start micro-cracks in the cells, so we book Alfama for the first hours of the morning, for the late afternoon once the sun has come off the slope, or for an overcast day. With the glass rinsed we clean the frames, clear the drainage and pull out the nesting material, feathers and leaves compacted underneath the rows. Then a straight visual check: glass, seals, clamps and the state of the fixings on an old roof. What we never do is touch the electrical side. No inverter, no DC wiring, no connectors, no protections, no module lifted out. If we see scorching, cracked glass, delamination or a chafed cable we photograph it and tell you to call your installer or a certified electrician, because that is their work and not ours.
