The buildings of the 1940s and 1950s along the Avenida da Igreja, in São João de Brito and across the Bairro de Alvalade were well built for their time, but with no continuous thermal insulation. Heat leaves mainly by three routes, and the camera shows all three clearly. Shutter boxes, many of them air voids open to the outside, appear as cold rectangles above each opening. Balcony slabs and columns cast into the façade run right through the wall and draw cold horizontal and vertical lines on the inside, which is precisely where mould later settles. And the joints of old window frames give themselves away as continuous cold threads wherever there is a draught. The inspection is done with the home heated and closed up beforehand, ideally on a cold day, because it is the contrast with the outside that makes the image legible. We work through every room and compare north-facing elevations with those that catch the sun, recording thermogram and photograph in the same framing. The practical aim is to rank the findings: to separate what a simple job puts right, such as insulating a shutter box or renewing sealant, from what calls for structural work. Many residents use this survey to take a reasoned proposal to the owners' meeting instead of arguing from impressions. It has to be said what thermography does not give you. It does not measure consumption and does not replace an energy certificate: it shows where there are surface temperature differences, not how much you are spending. It does not see through the wall, so the real thickness of any insulation remains unconfirmed without opening up. And it needs the right conditions: on a mild spring morning or a summer evening, with no difference between inside and out, the image comes out almost uniform and is not worth the trouble. In those cases we would rather rebook than hand over a report with nothing in it.
