Air Conditioning Installation in Lisboa

Thinking about air conditioning in Lisbon? In most homes the equipment is the easy part: what decides the installation is where the outdoor unit can go. Exterior wall, light well, balcony or roof — each option carries its own building rules and its own technical consequences, and that is where we start.

About our service in Lisboa

In Lisbon the façade of a block of flats is common property. Fixing an outdoor unit to it needs the owners' association to agree, and in parts of the Baixa, the Chiado and streets with tiled frontages that permission is simply never given. Before proposing anything we check what the building regulations allow and what alternatives exist: a private balcony with a screen, an internal light well, a terrace or the roof. The choice is not only bureaucratic. A unit squeezed into a closed light well with no air movement draws back in the heat it has just expelled and loses output on the hottest days, while a roof position means more metres of pipework and properly sized anti-vibration mounts. We set out the consequences of each option before going ahead. Once the position is settled, the job becomes the route. Much of the older stock in Arroios, Graça and Estrela has thick masonry walls with irregular fill, where we core-drill with a diamond bit at a controlled speed so the render around the hole does not blow. We run pipework through bulkheads, wardrobes, enclosed balconies or the rear elevation to keep visible trunking inside the flat to a minimum. The condensate line causes most of the trouble later: in a city block it cannot drip onto the street or onto the balcony below, so we tie it into a soil stack, or fit a condensate pump where there is no natural fall. The circuit is always vacuumed before any refrigerant is released. Sizing is done room by room, not for the flat as a whole. A west-facing living room in the Avenidas Novas, with a large window and no shading, needs more output than an internal bedroom of the same floor area. We take area, ceiling height, orientation, glazing and the number of people who use the room, and we would rather get it right than go large: an oversized unit starts and stops in short cycles, dries the air and uses more electricity for the same comfort. We also check the consumer unit, because many older flats in the city have no spare way to give the equipment a circuit of its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about air conditioning installation in Lisbon:

Do I need the owners' association to approve an outdoor unit on the façade?

In most Lisbon buildings, yes: the façade is common property and the position has to be agreed by the owners' association. On a private balcony it is usually enough to follow the internal regulations. We prepare the technical description and a drawing of the proposed position for you to put to the building manager.

How much does it cost to install air conditioning?

It depends on what the home needs: the output required, how many rooms, metres of pipework, the type of wall to be crossed, the floor you live on, access to the outdoor unit position and the condensate solution. We assess from photos on WhatsApp or with a site visit, and send a no-obligation quote before any work starts.

Where does the water the unit produces go?

Into its own line, tied into one of the building's soil stacks wherever there is one. Where the route has no natural fall we fit a condensate pump. Letting it drip onto the street or onto the balcony below is a guaranteed source of complaints and not something we do.
