The first thing we work out in Alfama is the walk. The van stops where a van can actually stop, down near Santa Apolónia or on one of the wider streets below the castle, and everything else is a carry: up the escadinhas, round the tight turns of a staircase built for nobody's suitcase, across landings the width of a doorway. Time spent on the stairs is time not spent cleaning, so we agree in advance how much linen the flat really needs and plan a single trip up and a single trip down with the used sets and the waste. The flats themselves are old, and the changeover reflects that. Shutters have usually been closed since the last guest left, so we open up and let the air move while the beds are stripped. Small bathrooms with original tiling need descaling rather than scrubbing; sanitary ware, taps and screens get worked on properly. Kitchens are compact, which makes the fridge, the hob and the bin the three things a guest notices first. Floors are washed, glass and mirrors done, and the flat is put back to the layout your listing shows. There is no washing and drying anything in the gap between two bookings, so linen and towels are replaced from sets we bring in, and consumables are topped up from stock kept in a cupboard on site.
