The August maths is what defines this town. A flat sleeping six that turns over on a Saturday with a two o'clock check-out and a four o'clock arrival cannot wash, dry and iron two beds' worth of linen plus eight towels in two hours, and no laundry on earth can either. The answer is stock. We work out how many sets the property needs to be made up instantly from clean linen, collect the used sets at the changeover, and return them ready before the following turn. Counts are agreed in writing and checked every time, which is the only way to know in July rather than September that towels are going missing. Sand and sun cream are treated as separate problems. Sand has to come out mechanically before washing, or it ends up in the drum and back in the fibres. Sun cream leaves oils and mineral filters that yellow on white cotton if the item is washed cool or left damp in a bag, so those towels are treated for oil first and then washed hot. Salt air along the seafront also means anything left folded slightly damp will smell within a day, which is why full drying matters more here than anywhere else on the Margem Sul.
