The rural half of this concelho is where we say no most often, and it is worth explaining why rather than leaving you to discover it. A waterless or low-water wash works by lifting dirt into a product and carrying it away on clean microfibre. That relies on the dirt being loose enough to encapsulate. A vehicle that has come off a wet track carrying dried clay and coarse grit does not qualify: dragging a cloth across that is grinding abrasive across the lacquer, and the result is a car covered in fine scratches that were not there this morning. So we assess the vehicle first, and where it is too heavily soiled to be dry-washed safely we decline the exterior and say so plainly. The interior can always go ahead, and on a working vehicle the interior is usually what needs the attention anyway. Working vehicles are a large part of what we do out here, and there is one condition. A pickup bed loaded with feed sacks, a van racked out with tools, a utility carrying materials: all of it has to come out before we start, or we clean around it and tell you honestly which areas we could not reach. We do not move tools, stock or materials. It is not squeamishness, it is that the person who loaded the vehicle knows where everything belongs and a stranger rearranging it helps nobody. What cleans up well on a working vehicle is the cab, and it makes more difference than the outside ever does. Rubber mats out and washed, the footwell dirt that has been trodden in vacuumed and extracted, the seat fabric worked over, the door shuts, the dashboard, the vents and the inside of the glass, which on a vehicle that runs dusty tracks goes hazy faster than anywhere else.

The cab, yes, always. The exterior depends on what is on it. Caked clay and coarse grit cannot be dry-washed without scratching the paint, and we will not do it just because we have been asked. If that is the state of the vehicle we do the interior, which is usually where the real difference is, and look at the outside another time once the heavy soiling has been rinsed off.
Do you empty the load bed or the van racking?
No. Anything in the vehicle needs to come out before we arrive, or we work around it and tell you what we could not reach. We do not shift tools, stock, feed or materials, partly because it is not our place to and partly because the person who packed it is the only one who knows how it goes back.
I am out past Bucelas. Do you actually come this far?
Yes, we travel across the whole concelho, including the villages out towards Fanhões and Lousa. Because it is a longer trip it is worth agreeing a day rather than expecting us the same afternoon, and if there is more than one vehicle at the same address it makes far more sense to do them in one visit.
