We need enough light, and we bring our own where the garage lighting is the kind that switches itself off every two minutes. And we need reasonable ventilation, which matters for us as much as for the car. None of that is usually a problem, and where it is the fix is simple: move the car up to the visitors' bay or out onto the forecourt for the duration. Tell us which floor you are on and send a photograph of the space when you enquire, and we will say straight away whether we can work there or whether the car is better brought up a level. Where the building has a condomínio, the visit should be agreed with them first. The work itself suits a garage car very well. Vehicles kept underground do not get rained on, so they carry a dry grey dust that settles evenly over the paint and builds up in the window rubbers and the panel gaps. It lifts cleanly with a low-water wash and no hose. Inside, a car doing short urban journeys never really airs, so the dashboard, the vents and the headlining hold more than you would expect. We vacuum through first, deal with the mats and the boot, then the plastics and the glass. No bodywork, no engine bay washing, no promises about scratches.

My space is very tight. Will you be able to work around the car?
That depends on how tight, so send us a photograph. What we need is room to open a door fully and pass down both sides of the vehicle. If the space is boxed in by pillars or by the neighbours, the usual answer is to move the car to a visitors' bay or the entrance ramp area for the duration, which takes a minute and makes the whole job better.
The garage lighting is terrible and it goes off constantly. Does that stop you?
No. We bring our own lighting, which is normal for us in underground car parks. Good light is not a luxury in this work, it is how you see the dust you have missed and the marks you have left. Ventilation and headroom matter too, and if a level is unusually low or stuffy we would rather bring the car up one floor.
Do I need to be there while you work?
Not for the whole visit. We need you at the start to open up, hand over the keys and point out anything we should know about, and at the end to look over the car. In between you can go back upstairs. Do take valuables out beforehand, and if there are child seats, lift them out, because we clean under them but we do not refit them.
