Hair does not sit on top of carpet, it works into the weave and wraps around the fibres, and a vacuum head passes straight over it without lifting anything. The way to shift it is mechanical: a rubber brush or a pet rake drawn across the surface in one direction, which raises the hair into a loose mat that can then be picked up by suction. It takes far longer than ordinary vacuuming and it is the single biggest reason one car takes longer than another of the same size. Boot linings, the backs of rear seats and the strip between the seat base and the backrest are the worst offenders. Order matters just as much as tools. We vacuum before we clean surfaces, always, because wiping down a dashboard while there is still grit in the vents and hair on the seats guarantees you finish with both redistributed across a supposedly clean interior. So the sequence is fixed: empty and remove, brush and agitate, vacuum thoroughly, then extract where needed, then surfaces, then glass last of all so it is not fogged by anything sprayed afterwards. We work waterless or with very little water, so nothing runs across the floor and nothing reaches the gully, and we bring our own power and lighting where the garage is dim. Expect the boot to take longer than the rest of the interior put together. If the animal travels in the car every week, having it done regularly is far less work than tackling a year of build-up in one go.
My space is in the garage under the building. Do you need permission?
If the car park is shared, yes, it should be cleared with the condomínio or the building manager before the day. It is their property and we would rather arrive expected than argue with a neighbour. We use very little water so there is no run-off into the garage drain, which removes the objection buildings usually have to car washing downstairs.
Why do you vacuum before cleaning the dashboard rather than after?
Because doing it the other way round undoes your own work. Vacuuming lifts dust and hair into the air and moves grit around the cabin, and it will settle on any surface you have just wiped. Cleaning in the right order, vacuum first and glass last, is most of the difference between a car that looks clean for a day and one that looks clean for weeks.
