Doors, intercoms, meter cupboards, lighting, alarm boxes and any exposed wiring are covered before we begin, and residents are told which day is the noisy one, because sound travels through a stairwell like a drum. Working outdoors on a busy street means keeping dirty water off pavements, parked cars and shop entrances, so gullies are covered, grit and paint flakes are swept and collected instead of being flushed into a rainwater drain, and we wash in a direction that gathers residue where it can be lifted. We agree where water and power come from before the day and plan how much water the job needs, since dry summers can bring municipal restrictions on water use. We would rather manage expectations than over-promise. Traffic film comes off well and the difference on a rendered facade is usually striking, but where the render is chalking, the wash removes the loose surface too and the wall then needs painting, which is worth knowing before you start. Graffiti on paint lifts cleanly; on bare render or stone it leaves a shadow, and some stains will not come out at all. Rust runs below railings and oil in a garage floor behave the same way. Where a block is scheduled for repainting, washing is the first stage rather than an afterthought, and any roof or terrace is assessed before we agree to clean it.
