On the estates, the most useful conversation is usually about frequency rather than plants. If a tree is to come out we identify what it is first, because cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal and olives have their own regime, so authorisation may be required and it is not something to promise on a doorstep. Vines and climbers over a yard need timing rather than force, and a hard cut at the wrong moment costs a year of growth. Water is the third recurring issue. Systems installed with the estates are often still on short daily cycles, which holds roots near the surface where summer heat finds them first, and misaligned heads water the tarmac while a corner of grass dies. Realigning, cleaning limescale out of nozzles and running longer at wider intervals early in the morning usually makes an existing system work properly again, without replacing it. Restrictions on water use can vary by município, so efficiency is worth having. Clippings, prunings and leaves leave with us for a licensed disposal point, and a plot that has genuinely gone back to scrub is clearance work rather than gardening.
