Planting that has been in the ground for thirty or forty years poses a question nobody enjoys asking: is this bed worth maintaining or worth replanting? Where the planting is sound, the answer is timing: each species pruned at the point in the year that suits it, and hedges taken little and often so they stay dense to the ground. Communal lawns fail in predictable places. People take the shortest line between a door and a car, and grass will never win against a daily footpath, so the honest options are a proper path or planting that tolerates the traffic. Elsewhere it is compaction and shade under mature trees rather than lack of feeding. Regular mowing through the spring and autumn flushes is what keeps a lawn thick, while a long gap followed by a hard cut leaves it yellow and open to weeds; through the hottest weeks growth stalls and visits should stretch out rather than continue on autopilot. Irrigation on these estates is often the original installation, with heads out of alignment, one zone that no longer opens and limescale narrowing every nozzle, so the wet patches and dry patches make no sense. Realigning, cleaning and reprogramming usually achieves more than new pipework, and running longer at wider intervals early in the morning sends roots deeper than a nightly sprinkle ever will. We work to a written scope agreed with the administrator, keep to the hours the buildings allow, and leave a note of what was done. Green waste goes to a licensed disposal point. Before any tree is felled we confirm the species, as cork oak and holm oak carry legal protection in Portugal and olives their own rules, and authorisation may be needed.
