Gardening Services in Lisboa

Let us be honest about the city first: most Lisbon addresses have no lawn and never will. What they do have is a logradouro behind the building, a courtyard reached through a hallway, a roof terrace above Arroios or Campolide, a balcony in Areeiro carrying more pots than anyone can water in August, or a ground floor flat in Estrela with a strip of planted ground. That is real gardening, just a different kind, and it is what we are asked for here: pruning trees and shrubs in confined spaces, keeping containers and beds alive through the summer, fitting a small watering system, planting and replanting, and clearing a courtyard that has been shut up for years.

About our service in Lisboa

Containers behave nothing like open ground and that is where most disappointment starts. A pot has a fixed volume of soil, so it dries from the top down within a day of hard sun on a west-facing terrace, the compost slumps and stops absorbing water, and salts from hard mains water build a pale crust on the surface and around the rim. The answers are unglamorous: refresh the growing medium, group pots so they shade one another, mulch the surface, and fit a drip line on a timer rather than relying on a hose and good intentions. New arrivals from northern Europe often plant what they know and lose it in the first real heat, so we would rather suggest species that take the Lisbon summer in their stride than replace the same casualties every year. Watering itself deserves a rethink. A short soak every evening keeps roots in the top layer of a pot or bed, precisely where the heat reaches them first; longer runs at wider intervals, early in the morning, wet the full depth and lose less to evaporation. Restrictions on water use can vary by município, and a garden set up to waste less copes better whatever a given summer brings. Where a terrace has no tap we look at how water would actually get there before proposing a system rather than after. Logradouros bring their own realities. Access is usually through the flat or a narrow corridor, so tools come in by hand and waste goes out the same way, in bags, on foot, to a vehicle parked where a vehicle can be parked. Many of these enclosed yards hold a mature tree, and older trees are also where the caution lies: cork oak and holm oak are legally protected species in Portugal and olives fall under their own rules, so felling can require authorisation and we never agree to it on request alone. We identify what is growing first. Pruning to bring light back into a dark yard is routine work. Everything cut goes with us to a licensed disposal point, and an overgrown plot rather than a garden is clearance work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions from Lisbon flats, terraces and courtyards:

I only have pots on a balcony. Is that too small a job?

No. Container planting is much of what we do in the city: refreshing compost, repotting, pruning, feeding and setting up a timer so the plants survive while you are away. We will tell you honestly if a single visit is all it needs.

The logradouro can only be reached through the flat. Does that stop you?

Not usually, but it changes the method and the time, since tools and green waste travel by hand through the building. We look at the route during the visit so the quote reflects the real work.

There is an old tree in the yard blocking all the light. Can it be removed?

We identify the species before that is discussed, because some trees are legally protected in Portugal, cork oak and holm oak among them, and olives have their own regime, so removal can require authorisation. Thinning and reduction pruning often restores the light without touching the trunk.
