Yards are reached through hallways, gardens through stairwells or garage ramps, gaps between buildings by a single gate, and steep streets in Graça or Campolide leave nowhere for a vehicle to stand. So almost everything is hand work: brushcutters, saws, and cut growth bundled and carried out along a route agreed in advance with the building. Beneath long-standing growth we find what a city yard collects over decades: rubble from past renovations, bagged rubbish, discarded appliances, rusted railings, collapsed wall stone, and sometimes an old cistern or light well with no proper cover.
