Land Clearing in Alvalade
Alvalade was laid out as a planned neighbourhood, and its blocks were built around interior courtyards with trees. That is the honest picture of land clearing here: there are no fields to clear, but there are a great many logradouros that have gone from garden to thicket over the years, along with ground-floor gardens that changed hands and stopped being maintained. Around Campo Grande and São João de Brito the plantings are old enough that self-seeded growth has taken over beneath them. We work throughout the parish, and every job starts with a look at the courtyard, the access and how much material is really in there.

About our service in Alvalade
The annual duty to clear vegetation applies to whoever owns the land, city address or not. In Portugal that clearing is part of wildfire prevention, managed strips have to be kept around buildings, and the câmara municipal checks compliance and can have the work carried out where an owner has not. A closed-over interior courtyard is land in that sense, and it is also a practical fire and pest concern for everyone whose windows look onto it. Our contribution is the work itself: cutting, gathering and removing. We do not submit anything for you and we cannot certify the property as compliant on your behalf. The rules and deadlines change from year to year and vary by município, so check with the câmara municipal about your own building. Alvalade courtyards are enclosed, and that single fact governs the job. There is generally no vehicle access at all: the way in is through an entrance hall, a stairwell or a garage, and every barrow of cut growth comes out that way to a vehicle on the street. That means agreeing a route and a time with the condominium, protecting the hallway floor, and cutting in stages so the material does not block the only exit. Under decades of growth in these yards we find tipped rubble from past flat renovations, bagged rubbish thrown from windows, old furniture, sections of rusted railing and, occasionally, a covered light well or drainage chamber. We photograph anything of that sort and raise it before continuing. The mature trees in these courtyards deserve a careful look rather than a chainsaw. Cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal and olive trees are regulated, and the original Alvalade plantings and the older quinta remnants around Campo Grande can include them. We identify each tree before proposing anything, and a protected specimen has to go through an authorisation, not a decision at the gate. Everything cut leaves for a licensed disposal point and none of it is dealt with by fire on the property. In a shaded courtyard the regrowth is slower than on open ground, but it does come back.

Frequently Asked Questions
What residents and condominiums in Alvalade ask us:
Our logradouro has not been touched in years. Is that a land clearing job or gardening?
Once a courtyard has closed over it is a clearing job, not a gardening visit, and pricing it as gardening is how people end up disappointed. There will be woody growth to cut with saws rather than shears, roots into the paving and the walls, and a volume of material that needs several loads taken away. After the first clearance it can go back to being a garden and be maintained normally. We are clear at the visit which of the two we are quoting.
Can the work be done without disrupting the whole building?
Largely, if it is planned. We agree with the condominium when the access route is in use, protect the hallway or garage floor, and stage the cutting so material is removed as we go instead of piling up in the entrance. Noise from brushcutters and saws is unavoidable for part of the day, so we schedule that deliberately inside our working hours, which run Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, with Sunday closed. Nobody wants a saw running at an unreasonable hour and we do not offer it.
There is an old tree in the courtyard that blocks all the light. Can you take it down?
We would look at it before answering. Cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal, olive trees are regulated, and older plantings in this neighbourhood can include protected species, so felling is not something to agree over a message. We identify the tree on site and tell you what that means. If it is protected the route is an authorisation; if it is not, we still discuss whether thinning the canopy and clearing the undergrowth would solve the light problem without losing the tree.
