There is generally no vehicle access at all: the way in is through an entrance hall, a stairwell or a garage, and every barrow of cut growth comes out that way to a vehicle on the street. That means agreeing a route and a time with the condominium, protecting the hallway floor, and cutting in stages so the material does not block the only exit. Under decades of growth in these yards we find tipped rubble from past flat renovations, bagged rubbish thrown from windows, old furniture, sections of rusted railing and, occasionally, a covered light well or drainage chamber. We photograph anything of that sort and raise it before continuing. The mature trees in these courtyards deserve a careful look rather than a chainsaw. Cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal and olive trees are regulated, and the original Alvalade plantings and the older quinta remnants around Campo Grande can include them. We identify each tree before proposing anything, and a protected specimen has to go through an authorisation, not a decision at the gate. Everything cut leaves for a licensed disposal point and none of it is dealt with by fire on the property. In a shaded courtyard the regrowth is slower than on open ground, but it does come back.
