Gardening Services in Alvalade
Alvalade is one of the few parts of Lisbon where the planted spaces behind the buildings were part of the plan. The blocks laid out from the forties onwards left real logradouros between them, and eighty years later those hold mature trees, shrub beds, a patch of grass and paved corners where residents sit. Many of the flats belong to people who have lived here for decades and can no longer manage their own strip of garden, and that is a large share of what we are asked to do. We handle pruning trees and shrubs, upkeep of shared beds and small lawns, watering systems, planting and transplanting, and clearing a logradouro that has slowly closed over.

About our service in Alvalade
Trees planted when these blocks went up have long outgrown the space allotted to them, and that is the recurring problem. Crowns meet overhead, ground floor flats lose their light, roots lift paving, and leaf fall in autumn buries whatever grass survives. Careful crown thinning and reduction, done in the dormant season for most species, gives back light without spoiling the tree, and lifting leaves off planted areas rather than leaving them to mat down makes a visible difference by spring. Where residents ask about removal, the species has to be established first: cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal, olives are governed by their own rules, and felling can require authorisation, so we identify the tree and explain the position rather than reaching for a saw. Grass under that much shade will never look like a lawn in an open garden, and pretending otherwise only sets up a disappointment. Where there is enough light we keep it cut on a rhythm through the growing months, which thickens it far more effectively than an occasional heavy cut, and let visits stretch out in the weeks when growth stops. Where light is genuinely scarce, replanting with shade-tolerant ground cover and keeping the beds sharp gives a better looking space than a permanently thin lawn. Because most of these areas are shared, the practical side matters as much as the horticulture. We put the scope in writing so the owners can agree it between themselves, keep to hours that suit the building, and leave a note of what was done and what should be decided next. Older residents often want the same visit to cover the small things they can no longer do themselves: pots on the balcony, a shrub cut back from a window, bulbs put in for spring. Watering, where a system exists, works better run deeply and early in the day at wider intervals than in short daily bursts, and hard water means the drippers need cleaning periodically. All green waste leaves with us for a licensed disposal point. An overgrown vacant plot is clearance work and separate from this.

Frequently Asked Questions
Questions from Alvalade residents and building owners:
The trees behind the block take all the light. What can be done legally?
Thinning and reduction pruning are normal maintenance and usually solve the light problem. Removal is different: some species are legally protected in Portugal and olives have their own rules, so it can need authorisation. We identify the tree before advising.
I am elderly and just need someone to keep my patch tidy. Do you take small jobs?
Yes, and a good number of our visits here are exactly that. We can agree a regular call, more frequent in spring and autumn, covering cutting back, pots, watering and taking the cuttings away.
Can grass be re-established under the trees?
Sometimes, where enough light reaches the ground and the leaves are cleared each autumn. In deep shade we would rather plant something that belongs there than sow seed twice a year that will not take.
