Gardening Services in Parque das Nações
Almost nothing here grows in ordinary ground. Parque das Nações was built from scratch, and the greenery between the towers of Oriente, Cabo Ruivo and Alameda dos Oceanos usually sits on a slab with a car park underneath: raised beds, planters, trees in large containers and lawns over a limited depth of soil. Add the wind that funnels off the Tejo along Passeio do Tejo and you have a demanding place for plants, however smart it looks. We work here for condominiums on communal planting and for residents on terraces and balconies, covering upkeep of grass and beds, pruning trees and shrubs, irrigation, planting and replanting, and clearing a neglected communal area.

About our service in Parque das Nações
Shallow, contained soil is the technical heart of the job. A planter holds only what it holds: water drains through or sits at the bottom with nowhere to go, roots cannot travel to find moisture, and the growing medium settles and loses structure over the years until the top of the bed is well below the coping. So the work is closer to horticulture in containers than to open-ground gardening. We top up and refresh compost, keep drainage layers and outlets clear rather than assuming they work, and choose replacements that can live in a fixed volume of soil against constant wind, instead of putting the same casualty back for a third time. Watering cannot be improvised in this situation, because there is no reserve of ground moisture to fall back on when a controller fails. We check zone by zone that water is reaching the plants rather than the paving, set longer runs at wider intervals early in the morning so the medium wets right through, and mulch surfaces to slow evaporation off exposed beds. Hard mains water leaves scale in emitters and marks on foliage, so flushing lines and cleaning drippers is routine work here, not an upgrade. Where water use is restricted the rules can vary by município, and a tuned system copes better than a generous one. A communal garden is not a private one, and the process reflects that. The scope has to be approved collectively before anyone can commit to it, buildings here have their own rules on access, service lifts and the hours when machinery may run, and there is often a security desk to clear. We work to a written scope, keep to the agreed hours, and leave the administrator a short report of what was done and what needs a decision. Green waste is carried out and taken to a licensed disposal point. On the rare occasion a tree has to come out, we identify the species first, since cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal and olives are covered by their own rules and authorisation may be required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Questions from residents and administrators in Parque das Nações:
Why do plants in the communal planters keep dying?
Usually a combination of exhausted compost, blocked drainage and irrigation that never wets the full depth. Replacing the plant without dealing with those three things simply buys another season. We look at the bed itself before recommending anything.
Do you deal with the administrator or with individual owners?
Both, on different work. Communal planting is agreed with the condominium, since the scope needs collective approval, while a balcony or terrace is a private arrangement with the owner or tenant.
The building only allows work at certain hours. Is that a problem?
No. We work Monday to Saturday and can fit within the window the building sets, including quiet hours for machinery, provided we know before scheduling so the right equipment comes on the right day.
