Land Clearing in Alfama

There is no scrubland in Alfama, and anyone telling you otherwise has never carried a load up the Escadinhas de São Miguel. This is a quarter of stairways, walled yards and rooftop terraces, and the clearing we do here is on that scale. Small enclosed yards behind old buildings that have filled with brambles and self-seeded shrubs, stepped terraces on the slope below the Castelo, strips of neglected ground on the Mouraria side, and gardens attached to properties that were empty for years. We work throughout the quarter. What makes it a real job is not the area but getting equipment in and material out on foot.

About our service in Alfama

Even here, the annual duty belongs to whoever owns the ground. Under Portugal's wildfire prevention rules a landowner has to clear the vegetation on their land each year and keep managed strips around buildings, and the câmara municipal checks and can arrange the work where the owner has not. Owners of a small walled yard in the Sé or by Santa Apolónia rarely think of themselves as landowners in that sense, which is precisely why it catches people out. Our contribution is the physical work: cutting, gathering, carrying and hauling away. We do not submit anything for you and we cannot declare your property compliant. The rules and deadlines change from year to year and vary by município, so check with the câmara municipal about your own address. Alfama access shapes everything. There is often no street a vehicle can reach, or one that can only be used at certain hours, and the way in is a stairway, a narrow alley or a route through the building itself. So the work is done with handheld brushcutters and saws, and the cut growth is bundled and carried out in stages to the nearest loading point, which may be some distance away. We plan that route at the visit, because getting it wrong is what turns a morning into a day. Old enclosed yards hide a lot: rubble from renovations tipped into a corner, bagged rubbish thrown from above, broken tiles, rusted railings, fallen wall stone, and now and then an old cistern under the growth with a cover you would not want to stand on. We photograph anything like that and raise it before continuing. Self-seeded figs and shrubs do most of the damage in Alfama, rooting into walls and lifting paving, and they are cut back rather than wrenched out so the masonry stays where it is. Any tree gets identified first: cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal and olive trees are regulated, and an old potted or planted olive in a yard here is not unusual. If a tree is protected or regulated, removal goes through an authorisation, not a decision on the day. All the cut material leaves for a licensed disposal point, and none of it is dealt with by fire on the property.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions from owners in Alfama:

Does land clearing even make sense in a quarter like Alfama?

Only if you define it honestly. There is no open land here, so nobody is clearing brush by the hectare in Alfama. What we do clear is enclosed yards behind old buildings that have gone to brambles and self-seeded figs, stepped terraces on the slope below the Castelo, small neglected strips towards Mouraria, and gardens of properties that stood empty. The volumes are smaller than on a rural plot, but the work is slower because everything moves on foot up and down stairs.

The fig growing out of my yard wall is lifting the stonework. Can it just be pulled out?

Pulling it out is usually the worst option, because the root has become part of what is holding the wall together and dragging it free takes stones with it. What we do is cut the growth back hard, remove everything above and treat the stump so it does not shoot again, then tell you honestly whether the wall itself now needs a mason. We would rather flag that than leave you with a cleared yard and a wall that comes down in the winter.

There is nowhere for a van to stop near my building. How does that work?

It is the normal condition here and we plan for it rather than pretending otherwise. At the visit we identify the nearest point a vehicle can legally load, measure the walking distance and work out whether the route is usable with bundles and bags. The work is then staged so material is carried out as it is cut rather than blocking the yard or the stairs. That carrying distance is a genuine part of the price, and we would rather show it to you than bury it.
