For a private garden the argument is simply for rhythm. Grass responds to being cut regularly by thickening and crowding out what you do not want; grass cut occasionally and hard turns pale and thin, and the weeds arrive to fill the gaps. The interval should follow the year rather than the diary: short between visits through the spring surge and again once the autumn rain starts things moving, much longer in the weeks when nothing grows at all. Shrubs and hedges get cut when their species is ready for it, not when the lawn is due, and that distinction is most of the difference between a garden that looks intentional and one that looks merely mown. Communal green space is a different animal. The client is the condominium rather than one owner, the scope has to be agreed by the assembly before anyone can commit to it, and there are usually rules about which hours a mower may run and where a van can park. We work to a written scope so the administrator knows exactly what each visit covers, and we leave a short note of what was done and what needs a decision, whether that is a tree lifting a kerb, a dry patch where a sprinkler no longer turns, or a shrub bed that would be better replanted than repeatedly cut back. Watering is the recurring technical problem in both cases. Systems installed with the buildings are often still running short cycles every evening, which keeps roots shallow and wastes a good deal to evaporation; longer runs at wider intervals early in the day work better, and mulched beds need much less. Hard mains water gradually blocks emitters, so flushing lines and cleaning them is part of the job. Before removing any tree we establish the species, since cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal and olives are covered by separate rules, and felling may require authorisation. Pruning for shape, safety and light is normal work. All prunings and clippings go with us to a licensed disposal point. Genuinely overgrown vacant land is clearance work rather than gardening.
