The rules and deadlines change from year to year and vary by município, so check with the câmara municipal about your own address. The practical question is always what can get to the vegetation. A parcel towards Belas with a field gate is cleared mechanically and quickly. A garden at Massamá reached through a house or down a narrow side entry is hand work with brushcutters, and every load goes out on a barrow past the front door. Slopes at Monte Abraão and Pendão rule out machinery altogether in places. We look at the entrance and the gradient before committing to anything. On plots left standing in a built-up area, there is nearly always something underneath: rubble tipped over a wall, bagged household waste, an abandoned mattress or fridge, old wire fencing, sometimes a covered tank. We photograph what turns up and raise it before working past it. Trees are identified individually. Cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal and olive trees are regulated, and older gardens and field edges around Belas do hold them among the pines and acacia. We check the species before a saw is used, and a protected tree means going through an authorisation rather than being felled because it is in the way. All cut material is taken away to a licensed disposal point, with none of it dealt with by fire on the property. Be prepared for the regrowth: one clearance resets the plot, it does not fix it.
