The câmara municipal checks and can arrange the work itself where the owner has not. On the higher ground towards Caneças, backing onto open slopes, that duty is real and enforced. What we do is the physical work: cutting, gathering and hauling away. We do not lodge anything with the council for you and we do not certify the plot on your behalf. The rules and deadlines change from year to year and vary by município, so check with the câmara municipal for what applies to your parcel this year. Access decides the method, and in Odivelas that varies street by street. Some parcels open onto a track where a tractor and flail can work through in a fraction of the time; others sit behind a row of houses on a slope steep enough that only brushcutters make sense, with everything cut carried out by hand to the nearest point a van can stand. Old cultivated ground brings its own complications. Under the growth we regularly find terracing stones, irrigation channels, water tanks and, more than once, a well with a rotten cover. We stop when we uncover something like that, photograph it and speak to you rather than letting a crew work blind over it. Fruit trees, figs and self-seeded acacia dominate on these plots, but protected species are present too. Cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal, and olive trees are regulated, and old smallholdings around Famões and Caneças frequently have both. We identify the species before deciding whether a tree can come out, and a protected one means an authorisation route rather than a same-day decision. Everything cut goes to a licensed disposal point, and none of it is dealt with by fire on the land. Demand builds sharply in spring, ahead of the fire season, so an early call gets you a date instead of a queue.
