If you own land in Portugal you are expected to clear the vegetation on it every year, as part of wildfire prevention, and to keep managed strips around any building on the plot. The câmara municipal checks this and, where an owner does nothing, the council can arrange the work itself and charge for it. That comes as a shock to a lot of overseas owners, who hear about it only when a notice reaches them. Our part is the practical one: we cut, collect and remove. We do not lodge paperwork on your behalf and we cannot declare your plot compliant for you. The rules and deadlines change from year to year and vary by município, so check with the câmara municipal for what applies to your land this season. How the work is done is decided by the access, not by the size of the plot. On the flatter fields towards Bucelas a tractor and flail get through quickly; on the terraced slopes above Fanhões, where the tracks are narrow and there are dry-stone retaining walls to protect, it is brushcutters and chainsaws on foot. Land that has been shut up for years usually holds more than vegetation. We routinely uncover rubble, fly-tipped sacks, scrap metal, old fencing wire and, now and then, an unmarked well or tank under the growth. When that happens we stop, photograph it and speak to you before going on. Trees need a separate conversation. Several species carry legal protection in Portugal, cork oak and holm oak above all, and olive trees are regulated too. All three turn up on older quinta land around Loures. We identify what is growing before a saw is started, and where a tree is protected, felling has to go through an authorisation rather than a decision on the day. Green waste is the item everyone underestimates: it becomes several loads, and haulage is often the biggest part of the quote. Not on the day, no. Cork oak and holm oak are legally protected in Portugal and olive trees are regulated as well, so a tree like that cannot simply be dropped because it is in the way. We identify the species first, and if it is protected the felling route is an authorisation, not a decision on site. What we can do straight away is clear the undergrowth around the trunks and lift the low branches, which is usually what the fuel-management side of the work actually requires.

What decides the price of clearing a quinta plot here?

The area sets the starting point, then the real variables take over: how dense and how woody the growth has become, the slope, whether a machine can reach the plot or the work has to be done on foot, how many stumps there are, and above all the volume of green waste to be hauled away. Rubble or dumped waste found on the plot is priced separately once we have seen it. We look at the ground first and then give you a no-obligation quote in writing.
