Getting the furniture into the flat is often the harder half of the job in Lisboa. Streets in the Baixa and Chiado have loading windows rather than parking, several are pedestrian only, and a lift built in 1955 will not take a two-metre wardrobe panel. We ask for the floor number, whether the stairwell turns on itself and how wide the flat door is before we commit to a plan. Where the carry is impossible as a boxed unit, we open the cartons at street level and take the panels up individually, which protects both the parts and the stairwell walls. The walls are the second variable. Within a single Lisboa street you can meet rubble stone, pombalino timber framing, hollow brick from the 1960s and plasterboard from a recent refurbishment, and each one wants a different anchor. Manufacturers require tall wardrobes and shelving towers to be strapped back to the structure, and that strap is only worth fitting if the fixing behind it holds. We drill accordingly, check what comes out on the bit, and choose the anchor from that. Old floors in the city rarely sit level either, so adjustable feet get set, packers go under the low corner, doors are realigned and drawers adjusted until they close square. What people call us for varies with the building. New tenants furnishing an empty flat, owners of short-let apartments replacing a tired sofa bed between guests, families adding a home office to a spare room, and moves where a wardrobe has to come apart at one address and go back together at another. Because that mix is so wide, cost is worked out per job: the number of items, how complicated they are, whether anything has to be dismantled first, the floor level and lift, and whether we also carry the boxes.
