We start with circuits on paper. The student traces the path of the current with a finger, predicts what happens when a component is added in series or in parallel, and only then calculates. Predicting before calculating is the whole method, because a prediction can be wrong in an interesting way while an arithmetic slip is merely wrong. Once the intuition is there, the relationships stop being arbitrary and become obvious, and questions that previously required recall become questions the student can reason through. This also protects them in exams, where unfamiliar circuit diagrams are routinely used to separate understanding from memorisation. A student who can reason about a circuit has nothing to fear from a diagram they have never seen before. Energy is the second area, and the classic error is treating conservation as if it were an equality that always holds. Students write initial energy equal to final energy without asking whether there is friction, whether external work is being done, or what system has actually been defined. We insist on defining the system explicitly before any energy balance, every time, including in questions that look trivial. The habit transfers directly to thermodynamics, which is the next topic in most syllabuses and one that punishes vagueness more severely still. The third area is the distance between school practicals and exam questions about practicals. Experiments in class are often done in groups and at speed, while the paper asks the student to design a procedure, control variables, identify sources of error and evaluate results. We work on those skills using written protocols and real data, since that is exactly the form the exam uses. We also practise writing evaluations, which is where most marks are lost: saying what limited the accuracy, and what change would genuinely improve it. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.
