We diagnose this quickly. The tutor gives the student a problem and watches where the pen stops. If they can describe the situation, identify the relevant principle and choose the right relationship, and then lose their way in the algebra or the units, the difficulty is mathematical and should be treated as such. If they cannot describe the situation at all, the difficulty is conceptual and needs a different approach entirely. Telling these apart takes one session and changes everything that follows, because the two problems have almost nothing in common and the usual response, which is to reread the chapter, helps with neither. We tell the family which of the two it is in plain terms, because the plans that follow are completely different and the student deserves to know what is actually wrong. Unit work is the most neglected of these skills and the most profitable to fix. Converting consistently to base units before substituting, keeping units written through every line, and checking dimensions at the end will catch most errors before they reach the answer. Students resist this at first because it looks like extra writing. They stop resisting after the first test in which it saves them, and it also earns method marks when the final number comes out wrong. Examiners can only credit a route they can follow, and units written through the working are what make the route legible. Standard form, significant figures and estimating orders of magnitude come next. A student who cannot tell whether an answer is plausible has no defence against a slipped decimal point, and these questions appear in every paper. We drill them in short bursts within each session rather than in one block, because that is how they stick. Five minutes at the start of each session, repeated over a term, does more than an afternoon spent on the topic once. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.
