Physics & Chemistry Tutoring in Lisboa

The part of science teaching that most often goes unsupported in Lisbon is the practical write-up. Experiments are done in class, usually in groups and usually in a hurry, and the report that carries the marks is written afterwards at home, alone, with no guidance at all. Students copy a table from a lab partner, draw a graph at speed and hand in something with no conclusions. It is the easiest place in the whole subject to pick up marks and the place where most are lost. Arranja Já sends a tutor to your home, in Alvalade, Benfica, Belém or Parque das Nações, and treats that work as seriously as the theory.

About our service in Lisboa

A report has a predictable structure and explicit criteria, which makes it teachable. What was measured, with what instrument, with what uncertainty; how the data were processed; what scale was chosen for the graph and why; what the gradient of the line of best fit actually represents; and what conclusion the data will and will not support. We go through each of those with real data from the student's own experiment, because generic examples never show the awkward points, and the awkward points are where the marks are. Most students have never been told that an uncertainty is expected, let alone how to estimate one, and that single omission costs marks in every practical of the year. We also insist on a conclusion that names the quantity found, gives its units and states the confidence in it, since a bare number earns very little. Graph work deserves its own attention because it also appears in the written papers. Choosing a sensible scale, plotting without distorting the trend, drawing a line of best fit that respects the data rather than the first and last points, and reading a gradient with units are all examinable skills that transfer directly from coursework to the exam. We practise them deliberately, with messy data rather than tidy data, since real results never fall neatly on a line and students need to be comfortable with that. Anomalous points are a case in point: identifying one and saying why it was excluded earns credit, while quietly ignoring it does not. The theory runs alongside, following whatever the class is covering, with particular attention to the topics that cause trouble every year: moles and stoichiometry in chemistry, and forces and energy in physics. Both of those reward diagrams before equations, and we insist on the diagram even when the student considers it unnecessary, because it is where the reasoning becomes visible. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.

Frequently Asked Questions

What families in Lisbon ask us most:

My daughter does well in tests and badly on practical work. Is that common?

Very. Practical write-ups are assessed against criteria that nobody teaches explicitly, and students lose marks for omitting uncertainties, choosing poor scales or writing conclusions that are not tied to the data. None of that reflects understanding of the science. It is also the quickest thing to fix, usually within two or three reports.

He is good at maths but struggles in physics. Why?

Because physics asks you to turn a described situation into a model before any mathematics happens, and that translation step is not mathematical. A student can solve an equation perfectly and still not know which equation to write. We work on modelling explicitly: read, draw the diagram, identify what is conserved, and only then calculate.

How much does science tutoring in Lisbon cost?

It depends on the level, how often sessions run, their length and whether the work is steady support or concentrated preparation before an assessment. Where you are in the city counts too, since the tutor travels. Tell us the situation and we will send a no-obligation quote with the sessions set out.
