English Tutoring in Lisboa

About our service in Lisboa

The first step is a diagnosis by separate skill, because an overall level tells you almost nothing useful. It is entirely normal to have excellent listening, comfortable reading, functional speaking and writing that sits well below the rest, and in that case training all four equally is a waste of time. We assess each component with tasks in the format of the actual exam and concentrate the work where the distance between the current level and the required one is largest. That gives short, directed plans instead of generic courses, and it gives an honest estimate of how long the gap will take to close, which matters when an application deadline is already fixed. Writing is almost always the weakest area for people with strong spoken English, and almost never for the reason they assume. The problem is rarely vocabulary; it is organisation, register and density. Long sentences, connectors used decoratively, paragraphs without a controlling idea, and conclusions that restate the introduction are recurring patterns, and every mark scheme penalises them. We work on models, word limits, systematic revision and rewriting, and improvement is usually visible by the third corrected text, because what changes is form rather than knowledge. Candidates often find this the most surprising part of the process, since they expected to be taught vocabulary. The speaking test assesses performance under pressure rather than knowledge. We train timing, how to develop an idea without rambling, the phrases that buy a second to think, and how to recover after a mistake, which is where most candidates lose their footing. We run full timed simulations with immediate feedback and repeat them until the format stops producing nerves. The difference between a first simulation and a fourth is usually larger than anything vocabulary work achieves in the same period. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.
