We read aloud together, with texts chosen slightly below the year level so the experience is one of success rather than struggle, and we move the level up as the fluency improves. Progress at this stage is measured in how willingly a child picks up a book, not in pages covered. After each passage we talk about it, with questions that require going back to the text rather than answering from memory, which is the habit the school's comprehension tasks are actually assessing. Vocabulary comes second and is built deliberately rather than incidentally. Academic words such as describe, compare, evidence, significant and consequently appear in every subject and are rarely taught to a new arrival, and a child who hesitates over them loses the thread of a question they could otherwise answer. We keep a running list by topic, with the child writing their own definition and an example sentence, reviewed briefly in later sessions so it is still there months afterwards. Parents are usually surprised how short the list is for each topic, somewhere around twenty or thirty words. Writing comes third, and starts orally. Before writing anything, the child says what they are going to write and the tutor helps order the ideas; only then does the pen move. This order prevents the piece that starts well and loses its way in the middle, which is far and away the most common pattern at these ages. It also makes the writing session shorter, which matters with a tired child. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.
