English Tutoring in Estoril

About our service in Estoril

The first session is normally spent on an essay the student has already written. We read the marker's comments together and translate each one into something concrete: what a paragraph without a controlling idea looks like, why an argument that is asserted rather than evidenced earns less, what it means for a conclusion not to follow from what came before. Most students have never had this conversation and leave it with a short, specific list of things to change, which is far more useful than an instruction to write better. The next essay is usually noticeably stronger, and that first improvement is what persuades them the work is worth doing. The second strand is literature, where the usual failing is retelling the plot. An analytical answer identifies a technique, quotes accurately, explains the effect produced on the reader and connects it to the wider text. Students who stop after identifying the technique routinely lose half the available marks with entirely correct observations. We practise finishing the chain, with short passages read aloud and interrogated closely, until it becomes the natural way to write about a text. Quotation technique goes with it: choosing the shortest quotation that proves the point and folding it into the sentence rather than dropping it in whole. The third is the mechanics that teenagers consider beneath them: sentence boundaries, punctuation in long sentences, consistency of tense, and proofreading with a checklist rather than by rereading. Rereading does not work, because the writer sees what they intended. A short fixed checklist recovers marks in every piece of written work, in English and in every other subject assessed by writing. It takes two minutes at the end of a task and students almost never do it unless they have been given the list. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.
