Lessons of this kind are built around conversation rather than around a syllabus or a textbook. We begin from the situations that actually occur in your week, which usually means greetings and small talk, the market, the café, deliveries, neighbours, appointments, and the occasional problem that has to be explained to somebody who does not speak English. Each one is practised until it stops requiring any conscious thought, and the grammar is introduced afterwards to explain patterns that are already in use. Adult learners who were taught the other way round, with rules first, often say this is the first time the language has felt usable rather than academic. Listening gets a disproportionate share of the available time, because it is where almost everyone is stuck and stays stuck. Portuguese spoken between two Portuguese people at normal speed bears little resemblance to the same sentences read aloud slowly, and learners who can read comfortably often understand very little in a real conversation. We work with recordings played several times, then with a transcript, until the student sees that they already knew the words. That realisation is usually the turning point, and from then on progress stops feeling random and starts being measurable from week to week. We also spend time on the social mechanics of a conversation, which matter a great deal at this stage. How to say you did not understand without ending the conversation, how to ask someone to slow down, how to hold your turn while you look for a word. Most people give up at exactly these moments. With a handful of phrases ready, they stop giving up, and the conversations get longer. Nothing else we teach has quite the same effect on confidence. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.
