With the adults, the plan is entirely practical and aimed at independence. Services, the children's school, health, tenancy and work are what determine quality of life, so that is where we start, with vocabulary and with simulations of the conversations they will actually have. Listening runs through everything, because that is what separates understanding a slowly spoken sentence from following a real exchange. We work with authentic audio and with repetition, and we measure progress by situations handled alone rather than by chapters finished. Dealing with a phone call from the school without help counts for more than any written test we could set. With the children and teenagers, the focus is almost entirely on school. Playground Portuguese arrives quickly and misleads families, because a child can look entirely integrated long before they can follow a science worksheet. Classroom Portuguese demands abstract vocabulary, comprehension of written instructions and structured writing, and without directed support that gap can persist for years and drag down every subject. We coordinate with what is being taught in class, working on the vocabulary of exercise instructions and on how answers are expected to be written, which is where marks are lost even when the content is perfectly well known. The third point is the dynamic at home. It is very common for children to become the family's translators, which solves the immediate problem, stalls the adults' learning and places a responsibility on a child that is not theirs to carry. We raise this openly and agree situations in which the adults handle things themselves, even when it takes longer and goes badly the first time. Children should be children, and adults learn faster once they stop having an interpreter at hand. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.
