For a short stay we work from a strictly practical list and ignore everything that falls outside it. Ordering, shopping, transport, dealing with a landlord, a doctor's appointment, a pharmacy, the gym, the phone contract: these are finite situations, and each one of them can be made automatic with enough practice. We also teach the handful of phrases that keep a conversation alive at the moment comprehension fails, which matter more than any amount of grammar, because they determine whether the other person switches to English or carries on in Portuguese. Students who have those phrases get far more practice out of ordinary daily life than those who do not, without spending an extra hour studying. For the students who are staying longer, we add listening practice in a serious and systematic way. Living in an international flat means hearing almost no Portuguese at home, so exposure has to be deliberate: recordings, podcasts, conversation at normal speed. Without that, two years can pass with very little progress, which is a common and entirely avoidable outcome among foreign students here. We set short listening tasks between lessons and check them at the start of the next one, because without some kind of mechanism almost nobody does it on their own. We also deal with the vocabulary of paperwork, which catches every foreign student here at some point or another. Registering with the authorities, opening a bank account, residence documents and university administration all arrive in Portuguese and in a register nobody teaches. We read real documents together, work out what each section is asking for and prepare the questions to ask at a counter. Arriving at an office knowing the three sentences you will need changes the experience completely. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.
