We nearly always start with comprehension rather than with speaking, because that is what unlocks participation. Someone who understands what is being said around them can reply in English and stay in the conversation; someone who does not is isolated regardless of how welcoming their colleagues are. A few dozen well-chosen words increase how much you can follow out of all proportion to the effort, which is why we prefer short directed plans over long general courses that spend months on material you will never use. The third strand of the work is life outside the office, which corporate language plans usually forget and which weighs most heavily on whether a family stays. School, health centre, building management, services and neighbours all require Portuguese and a vocabulary entirely different from the professional one. We build those situations into the plan from the start, with practical simulations of phone calls and parents' meetings. It is frequently here that a family feels the first real difference, rather than at the office. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.
