Maths Tutoring at Home in Lisboa

Families who contact us in Lisbon are rarely dealing with a student who cannot do maths. They are dealing with a student who changed systems. A child who did primary school in one country, moved into an international school here and is now facing IGCSE or IB assessment has met three different notations, three ways of setting out a solution and three sets of expectations about what counts as an answer. The gaps left by those transitions are specific and findable. Arranja Já sends a tutor to your home, in Alvalade, Campo de Ourique, Belém or Parque das Nações, and starts by locating them instead of reteaching the whole syllabus.

About our service in Lisboa

The first session is a diagnosis, not a lesson. The tutor gives the student problems from earlier years and works upwards until the point where confidence disappears, which in students who have moved countries is often well below their current grade. That is not a judgement on ability; it is the predictable result of topics being taught in different orders in different systems. Knowing exactly where the floor is turns a vague sense of struggling into a short, concrete list of things to fix, and that list is usually much shorter than the family feared. Most students who believe they are hopeless at maths turn out to be missing three or four specific things. We share it openly, because a plan that nobody understands is a plan nobody follows. The second thing we deal with is presentation, which costs more marks than most parents realise. Every exam board has its own conventions about method marks, about how much working has to be shown, and about when a calculator answer is acceptable as justification. A student who was trained in one convention and is assessed under another loses marks with entirely correct mathematics. We work with past papers and mark schemes side by side, until the student can predict how a solution will be scored before writing it. Students find this oddly satisfying, because for the first time the marking stops feeling arbitrary. The third is language. Students doing maths in a second language often stall on the wording of a question rather than on its content, and vocabulary such as gradient, rate of change or stationary point has to be built deliberately. We keep a running glossary and read question stems aloud until the translation step disappears. It is unglamorous work and it routinely unlocks a year of marks that never reflected what the student actually knew. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.

Frequently Asked Questions

What families in Lisbon ask us most:

My son moved from a British system into the Portuguese curriculum. What changes in maths?

Less content than you would expect and more form than you would expect. Much of the syllabus overlaps, but notation, terminology and above all the expectation of written justification differ substantially. Portuguese marking rewards an explicit argument in a way some other systems do not. The first few sessions usually go on translating habits rather than teaching new mathematics.

Can the sessions be in English?

Yes, and for a student assessed in English that is usually the sensible choice. We set the working language at the start, normally the language of the exam, and use the other only to clarify a term. Switching constantly between the two creates exactly the vocabulary confusion we are trying to remove.

How much does maths tutoring in Lisbon cost?

It depends on the level, how often sessions run, their length, and whether they are one-to-one or shared between siblings. Intensive preparation before an exam is a different shape of work from steady support across the year. Tell us the situation and we will send a no-obligation quote with the sessions set out.
