Nearly every weak investigation we see fails in the same way: the question is too broad, or it cannot be measured with the equipment available, or it has no real biological mechanism behind it. A good question is narrow, measurable and connected to something the syllabus explains, and finding one is a conversation rather than a flash of inspiration. We spend the first sessions there, testing candidate questions against those three requirements, and discarding most of them. An hour spent discarding ideas saves several weeks of work that would have scored poorly however carefully it was written up. Students find this stage frustrating until they see a classmate collect data for a question that could never have been answered. The second stage is the design. Which variable is manipulated, which are controlled and how, how many repeats are realistic, what the control group is for, and what the likely sources of error will be. We also ask the student to predict what the data will look like and to say what result would disprove their hypothesis, because an investigation that cannot fail is not an investigation. Writing this down before any data is collected makes the eventual discussion straightforward instead of improvised. The evaluation section, which carries real weight, then has something concrete to evaluate against. Alongside the coursework we work on command words, which quietly decide marks across the whole subject. Describe, explain, compare, suggest and evaluate each ask for something specific, and a student who explains when asked to describe loses marks while writing perfectly good biology. We practise with real questions and mark schemes until the distinction is automatic. It costs very little time and it recovers marks the student had already earned by knowing the material. We work Monday to Saturday, 9am to 8pm, and we are closed on Sunday.
